Wildfires in Catalonia: a challenge that demands urgent climate action

Catalonia is experiencing its worst wildfire season start in 15 years, with over 9,700 hectares burned before mid-July, according to data from the Department of Climate Action and Firefighters of the Generalitat (source 3Cat). This alarming figure triples the average of the past ten years.

Why is the problem worsening?
Wildfires in Catalonia are not new, but they are intensifying due to several factors:

  • Climate change: Extreme temperatures and prolonged droughts leave forests under severe water stress with large amounts of dry biomass ready to ignite.

  • Lack of forest management: The abandonment of agricultural and livestock activities reduces the “agricultural-forest mosaic” that once acted as a natural firebreak.

  • Urban sprawl: Increasing numbers of homes in urban-forest interfaces raise the risk to people and infrastructure.

Environmental, social, and economic impact
Beyond the obvious ecological damage—loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, and CO₂ emissions—wildfires carry high social and economic costs: evacuations, damaged infrastructure, impacts on tourism, and poorer air quality.

Catalonia, along with regions like Castilla y León and Andalusia, is among the areas on the peninsula with the highest structural risk due to its climatic and landscape conditions (see CREAF report).

What can citizens and businesses do?
Although structural prevention depends on public policies and active land management, everyone can contribute to reducing environmental pressures and moving towards a more resilient model.

As citizens:

  • Choose responsible consumption by avoiding single-use products and opting for low-carbon footprint materials.

  • Participate in or support local reforestation or natural space management initiatives.

  • Take extra precautions in outdoor activities: do not throw cigarette butts, avoid making fires, and report negligent behavior.

As businesses:

  • Replace plastics and polluting packaging with sustainable or circular alternatives.
For example, at Wegsco we offer innovative solutions like Solubag: water-soluble bags that leave no microplastics or toxic residues, helping reduce environmental pressure on already fragile ecosystems.

  • Design processes or services that reduce emissions, generate less waste, and promote the circular economy.

A collective challenge
The climate crisis underlies the increase and severity of wildfires. Adapting our habits, businesses, and ways of producing and consuming is no longer optional but necessary.
